I Took a Pill in a Hospital

images.duckduckgo.jpg

Dangerous I know, but it was for my own good. Swallowing any sort of pill has never been the start of a story or any song that I have written (I have never written a song). An artist by the name of Mike Posner has though, and it’s apparently quite the tale.

His song I Took a Pill in Ibiza came out in 2015, but I never heard of it until now. Even if I was in the dark over the matter, it rose to #30 in Billboards Top 100 Pop Songs of 2016. The song has a decent beat, and it was enough for me to want to find out what was in the lyrics.

I took a pill in Ibiza
To show Avicii I was cool
And when I finally got sober, felt 10 years older
But fuck it, it was something to do
I’m living out in LA
I drive a sports car just to prove
I’m a real big baller ’cause I made a million dollars
And I spend it on girls and shoes

I like Avicii, and I think he has some good songs but is he forcing people to do drugs? Maybe Mike was going a little too ham that night, or Avicii causes trouble. I do not know enough about the two to comment right now. Get back to me on that.

Another thing that bothers me is that he made a million dollars and spends all of his money. If you live in L.A., and you make a million dollars, you’ll only have five hundred grand after state and federal taxes. If he spends it all on a sports car, and wherever his most likely expensive home is, that doesn’t really leave a lot of money for those girls and shoes. I hope he has more songs coming out to keep up with his spending.

But you don’t wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don’t ever wanna step off that roller coaster and be all alone
You don’t wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don’t wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all I know are sad songs, sad songs

I have never heard someone in a song or in real life talk about the “right way” to ride a bus. It’s brilliant that he brings it up, and I want to know of all the different ways of riding a bus. The rest of the lyrics to this part is really depressing. He doesn’t sound happy, yet the beat is cheerful. A peculiar phenomenon that made me want to break down songs in the first place.

I’m just a singer who already blew his shot
I get along with old timers
‘Cause my name’s a reminder of a pop song people forgot
And I can’t keep a girl, no
‘Cause as soon as the sun comes up
I cut ’em all loose and work’s my excuse
But the truth is I can’t open up

Oh, Damnit Mike! I was really hoping you were going to do well, but you tell us in the same song that you already blew it. That’s impressive. What really peaks my intrigue is that fact that his name is a reminder of a pop song that old timers would get. I spent a solid 48 seconds trying to find out online but found nothing.

Besides that, it’s more sad lines… with really jamming beats.

Repeat lines so nothing to add here. Seriously, there is nothing to say here. Like the Barenaked Ladies said, “It’s all been doooooooooooooooone befooooooooore.” So scroll down to the next paragraph. Thank you.

I took a plane to my home town
I brought my pride and my guitar
All my friends are all gone but there’s manicured lawns
And the people still think I’m a star
I walked around downtown
I met some fans on Lafayette
They said tell us how to make it ’cause we’re getting real impatient
So I looked ’em in the eye and said

You don’t wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don’t ever wanna step off that roller coaster and be all alone
You don’t wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don’t wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All that I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all that I know are sad songs, sad songs

Yes! You are correct that this is the time I’ve put two paragraphs of the lyrics together as one section. Glad to know people have been reading. These two go together because the first paragraph is a build up to the chorus.

Either way, it was the same effect. The soundings of a saddened teenager writing in their diary. You only know sad songs? Sure.  This is one of my favorite songs to listen to right now, and I don’t think I can listen to it now. I probably still will, but it’ll just be different. It won’t.
