The Importance of Motion

It’s amazing that in a world of endless opportunity, I find myself bored from time to time. Because of this realization, I’ve been striving for ways to fight boredom. With considerable thought, I have found that the more time I spend occupying my mind and body with even the most basic tasks, results in less opportunity for boredom. Sure, everyone gets bored from time to time, but I’ve found a simple tool to utilize when I find myself with nothing to do.

The best example I’ve found, is simply, walking. Taking time out of my day to drop everything and walk. Not for exercise, though that is a bonus, but for the opportunity to experience myself inside the world and become familiar with what surrounds me.

By turning off distractions (cell phone, music, television etc.) and allowing the mind to free up, I’ve found you can conceptualize your life in an organic and peaceful way. During this solo time, I’ve pondered things that are troubling me in life or things I want to see happen in my future. I have also spent this time observing the world around me, noticing how amazing the intricacies of daily life can be. These are things we may not think of often due to the distractions of modern life.  I imagine you can also experience these insights by limiting your distractions.

This is a basic example, that with some effort, I have found, can offer clarity in life or help identify purpose as well as help in our understanding of the world around us. I don’t think we were designed to sit in front of flickering boxes (TV’s) and zone out of reality until the end of time. We should live our lives stimulated by original thought, not by thoughts others have planted within us. By using this simple action and others like it, maybe we can begin to imagine and shape what our lives as individuals can be, free from distraction.

So. Taking some time out of each day to walk or think in quiet contemplation has helped me to realize what is important and offered guidance into how to proceed through daily life. Hopefully this strategy can be useful to you as well.
